| Liverpoollu gençlerin macerası 1990 yılının yazında 'PAGAN ANGEL' ismiyle başladı. Güçlü sound'ları birçok etkilenimle beraber klasik doom metal olarak şekillendi. Kasım 1990'da ilk demoları olan 'AN ILIAD OF WOES'u kaydettiler. 1991 yılının Ocak ayında demonun çıkmasıyla isimlerini 'ANATHEMA'(meal: Tanrı'nın yada kilisenin lanetine uğramış, afaroz edilmiş) olarak değiştirmeye karar verdiler. Bolt Thrower ve Paradise Lost'u destekledikleri konserlerde kendi evlerinde ciddi bir fan kitlesi kazandılar ve yavaş yavaş tüm Avrupa'da kulaklarda yer edinmeye başladılar. başladılar. Konserlerle geçen birkaç aydan sonra 'ALL FAITH IS LOST' isimli ikinci demolarını kaydetmek için stüdyoya girdiler. 1991'de çıkan bu kayıt dergilerden ve fanzinlerden olumlu eleştriler aldı. Aynı yıl grubun 'THEY DIE' isimli ilk single'ı WITCHUNT RECORDS etiketiyle piyasaya çıktı. İlk basımında tükenen bu kayıt grubun daha fazla tanınmasını sağladı. Grup PEACEVILLE RECORDS'un dikkatini çekti ve 1992 Ekimin'de yayınlanacak olan PEACEVILLE compilation 'VOLUME 4' için 'Lovelorn Rhapsody' isimli parçayı kaydetti. Daha sonra grup şirketle 4 albüm için anlaşma imzaladı ve Kasım '92'de 'THE CRESTFALLEN' E.P.si piyasaya çıktı. Cannibal Corpse'u destekledikleri İngiltere turnesi başarılı geçti ve grup canlı performansının ne kadar iyi olduğunu gözler önüne serdi. İlk albüm 'SERENADES' Şubat 93'te piyasaya sürüldü. Olumlu eleştiriler alan albüm METAL HAMMER'da ayın albümü seçildi. Aynı zamanda 'SWEET TEARS' videosu MTV'de gösterildi ve oylama sonucu ayın albümü seçildi. Grup geniş bir İngiltere turuna ve aynı plak şirketinde olan gruplarla (My Dying Bride, At the Gates) özel bi gösteriye katıldı. Daha sonra AT THE GATES ile beraber İngiltere konserlerine devam etti, akabinde 15 günlük kısa bi Avrupa turnesi geçirdi. Romanya, Hollanda ve Belçika'daki festivalleri de içine alan ilk uzun Avrupa turnesi Ocak 94'te tamamlandı ve grup uzun süredir beklenen mini albümü "PENTECOST III"yi kaydetmeye koyuldu. Ardından Brezilya'da INDEPENDENT ROCK festivaline katıldı, ayrıca Avrupa'da da boy göstermeyi ihmal etmedi. Gecikmeler 'PENTECOST III'nin çıkışını '95 Mayısına kadar sürükledi. Grup bu sıralar ikinci albümünü kaydediyordu ve grupta ayrılık rüzgarları esmeye başladı. Vokalist Darren White gruptan ayrıldı. Yeni bir eleman almak yerine vokali gitarist Vincent Cavanagh üstlenecekti. Albümün çıkışından hemen önce Cathedral'i destekledikleri bir İngiltere turuyla grup yeni kadrosunun performansını görme fırsatı verdi. Yeni albüm 'THE SILENT ENIGMA' Ekim '95'te piyasaya çıktı. Son kadro değişikliğinden sonra bu albüm büyük bir başarının da habercisi oldu. Orkestral düzenlemeler, karanlık melodiler, geniş bir vokal yelpazesi, ve olgunlaşmış bir kadro gruptaki gelişimin göstergesiydi. Paradise Lost ile İngiltere turundan başlayarak yeniden uzun bir Avrupa turnesine çıktılar. Bu arada Dynamo Festivali'nde de başarılı bir performans sergilediler. Kasım 96'da çıkan bir sonraki albüm 'ETERNITY', daha önce görülmemiş bir müzikal gelişime ve olgun yaklaşımın kanıtıydı. Basından epey övgü (tabi biraz da eleştiri) aldı. Atmosferik entrumanlar, melodi, temiz vokallerin grubun 'HEAVY' yönüyle mükemmel bir şekilde harmanlanması inanılmaz etkileyici bir albüm ortaya çıkarmıştı. Tekrar uzun bir Avrupa turu, festivaller grubun fan kitlesinin gitgide genişlemesini sağladı. Mayıs '97'de grubun ilk videosu olan 'A VISION OF A DYING EMBRACE' piyasaya çıktı. Bu kayıt kliplerin yanı sıra grubun MY DYING BRIDE'ı desteklediği Krakow(POLONYA) konserini de içeriyordu. Haziran '97'de davulcu John Douglas gruptan ayrıldı. Yerine eski SOLSTICE davucusu Shaun Steel(şu an MY DYING BRIDE'de) geçti. 1998 Haziran'ında grubun en çok ses getiren albümü olan 'ALTERNATIVE 4' çıktı. Albüm turunun başlangıcında yine kadro değişiklikleri baş gösterdi. Efasanevi basçı Duncan Patterson müzikal farklılıklar nedeniyle gruptan ayrıldı. Yerine Duncan'ın diğer grubu olan DREAMBREED'de birlikte çaldığı Dave Pybus geçti. Ayrıca eski MY DYING BRIDE klavyecisi Martin Powell da gruba katıldı. Süpriz bi değişiklik de John Douglas'ın da gruba geri dönüşüydü. Grup 9 Ekim 1998 tarihinde de İstanbul'da(Rock House) bir konser verdi. 400 civarı seyircinin izlediği ve ASAFATED'ın ön grup olarak çıktığı konserde ses düzeni pek iyi olmasa da grup mükemmel sahne performansıyla büyük beğeni topladı. Bu arada grubun Peaceville ile sözleşmesi sona ermişti. Alternative 4'un başarısıyla daha büyük bir şirkete geçmesi kesin gözüyle bakılan grup Peaceville'ın bir nevi babası niteliğindeki şirket 'MUSIC FOR NATIONS' ile anlaştı. 1999 Haziran'ı MFN etiketiyle çıkacak ilk albüm 'JUDGEMENT'ın piyasaya sürüldü. Cavanagh kardeşler bu albümü 1998'de kaybettikleri anneleri HElen Cavanagh'a adadılar. Duncan'ın yokluğuna rağmen bu albümden yine övgüyle söz edildi. Grup aynı yıl uzun zaman sonra Dynamo Festivaline dönüşünü gerçekleştirdi. ***. Matin Powel'ın CRADLE OF FILTH'e katılmak için gruptan ayrılmasından sonra yine eski COF klavyecisi Les Smith gruba dahil oldu. Les Smith daha önce ETERNITY'de çalmıştı ve turlarda grupla birlikte çalmıştı. Bu kez tam anlamıyla kadrodaydı. Ekim 2001'de şimdiye kadarki kayıtlar arasında en yavan albüm olan 'A FINE DAY TO EXIT' piyasaya çıktı. CRADLE OF FILTH'in laneti yine grubun üstündeydi ve albümün çıkışından hemen önce Dave Pybus gruptan ayrılacağını duyurdu ve COF'te bas görevini üstlendi. Bu albümden sonraki turlada geçici olarak George Roberts gruba yardımcı oldu. 2001 ve 2002 yıllarında 'RESONANCE' ve 'RESONANCE 2' adında en iyi ANATHEMA parçalarının toplandığı iki albüm piyasaya sürüldü. RESONANCE yavaş, bayan vokal ve balad parçalardan oluşan; RESONANCE 2 ise JUDGEMENT albümü öncesindeki kayılardan grubun daha heavy parçalarını içeren bir BEST OF niteliğindeydi. Mart 2002'de grubun resmi internet sitesindeki bir açıklamada Daniel Cavanagh gruptan ayrılacağını ve artık eski basçı Duncan ve yeni grubu ANTIMATTER ile çalışacağını açıkladı. Nisan 2002'de tuhaf bir şekilde yine resmi internet sitesinde daha önce Danny'nin yaptığı açıklamanın sadece Nisan 1 şakası olduğu duyruldu. (Pek de inandırıcı değil...) Kasım 2003'te grubun son albümü 'A NATURAL DISASTER' yayınlandı. Artık grupta basçı olarak Cavanagh kardeşlerin üçüncüsü Jamie Cavanagh vardı. Grup Haziran 2004'te Rock İstanbul kapsamında üçüncü kez ülkemizde bulundu. Her zamanki gibi performansı muhteşemdi. Sonuçta hem izleyici, hem grup, hem de organizatörler durumdan hoşnut oldu.
